I Trusted In The Lord

by: Mary Calderon

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5,6 NIV

Being an adult and still living at my mother′s house, I felt the need to be independent, and so my cousin and I decided to rent a house together. My cousin, her nine year brother, my daughter and I, all moved into a two- bedroom house with a rental cost of $500.00 a month. The rent, and the utility bills were shared equally.

We move into the house at the end of August. I was expecting we would stay together for awhile, until one of us had saved enough money, to either get our own place or build our dream house but that was not to be.

The first month was fine, just the electrical bill of $5 and $100 each for groceries, covered what we needed. The following month was the same but by the third month, my cousin indicated that she would be moving to the United States to pursue higher education. She added that her brother would be staying with me until his mother could send for him. That was my first disappointment because at that point I was not prepared to pay the monthly $500 house rent plus utilities, groceries and everything else.

I prayed and asked for God′s help, His strength and courage to go through the challenges that I had to face. He heard my prayer and kept me at work all the time. Even though the money was small, I was able to make it.

After five years had elapsed the owner of the house where I lived decided to put the house up for sale. I was given first preference to buy since I was occupying it at the time.

Sad to say, by then I was out of a job and she would be arriving soon to settle business since I had indicated interest in purchasing the house. To be honest, I had thought that by the time that the house would have been up for sale that I would have been employed again and would have already saved up a substantial amount of money before the owner returned but she came sooner than I thought. I was in a quandary. I had no job but I wanted the house. However, without any money, I would have to move out.

One morning I visited all the banks in my town to see which one would give me a good offer. I went home after hearing what each had to say and with the list of documents that I needed to present.

I fasted for three days. Then I made an appointment with the loans manger. I prepared all the required documents along with the quantity survey plan which incidentally was done for me free of charge. After a few meetings, the loan was approved. I received all the money I needed and it all happened just in time. The same week the owner came I got the cheque from the bank.

Two weeks later I got a job and I have been working ever since. I have been able to pay back my loan never missing a payment, by the grace of God.

I continue to thank God every day. To date, it is nine years since I took the loan. Therefore, with faith and trust in the Lord wonders can happen. Let us trust in God completely.
