Published: November 16, 2009
The Health Departments of West Indies Union, TCI Mission and the Blue Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted a Health workshop from October 24-27, 2009 on the Island of Providenciales.
The main presenter for the workshop was Dr. Milton Gregory, Health Ministries Director of West Indies Union. The main goal of the presentations was to promote a healthy lifestyle that will improve the quality of life enjoyed by the church members. He presented a holistic approach to health in which he defined wellness as being "a proactive, preventive approach designed to achieve optimum level of function in the physical, mental, spiritual, social, emotional, environmental and occupational dimensions of life."
A free clinic was held on Sunday, October 25 at the Blue Hills church in which Dr. Dawn Perry offered her services to the members. The members were happy for this opportunity and they made good use of it. Cooking class was held the Monday night. That proved to be a very exciting event. The members who attended were divided into different groups and they were given the opportunity to prepare healthy vegetarian meals. Some of the dishes included mock chicken, tofu mayonnaise, stuffed eggs, chili and calypso rice.
On the Tuesday night exercise class was held; members were taught basic aerobics exercises that they could practice at home to improve their health and maintain their figure.
The workshop ended on the Wednesday night; Sis Nora Tyndall a registered nurse and health director for the Blue Hills SDA church presented a lecture on the spiritual and physical benefits of fasting. She noted that fasting is one of the most effective ways to eliminate toxins from the body.
Sis Almartha Thomas Health Ministries Director of the TCI Mission commenting on the health workshop said, "The workshop was very rewarding. The apostle Paul wrote, ′I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.′ Philippians 4:13. As we ask for God´s help, He will give us strength to overcome and to make the necessary changes in our lives as we daily commit ourselves to live a more productive lifestyle by God´s grace."
